Mole Removal

Moles (please see Moles Information Section) are removed for one of three common reasons.

They may be suspicious for possible malignancy (please see  Melanoma Information Section), symptomatic (pain, itching, or irritation), or simply unsightly to the patient.

Moles are removed completely or biopsied (partial removal if very large and there is a concern for malignancy) by numbing the area with a local anesthetic.  Most moles are removed with a shaving technique whereby the lesion is cut off flat with the skin surface.

Less often, the mole may be removed by an excision completely through the skin and a suture placed.  The choice is made by Dr. Ecker based on the requirement for a good specimen and the expected cosmetic result.

All moles excised are submitted for microscopic exam and the results reported to you.
